Link roundup 3/4/12

4 Mar

This guy makes fantastic points about why you need to have a strategy before you invest in social, especially Facebook. Definitely supports what we talked about in class this week.

Love this QR code blog.

So many articles on the new Facebook layout:

This may be a silly question–but what is an app? Is that like “notes, photos, videos…ect”?

Not a silly question at all – I had intended to cover Facebook apps in our class that got cancelled and then I cut them, but maybe I shouldn’t have! There are two kinds of apps (applications) on Facebook: native and third party. Native apps are the ones you have listed – notes, photos videos. They’re called native because they were designed and developed by Facebook.

Third party apps are things like contests and giveaways, like this example from Wildfire that I showed in class today: contest from Green Mountain Naturals and giveaway from Idaho Potatoes.

Other apps are things like games (Farmville, Mafia Wars, Words with Friends, etc) that you can play with your Facebook friends inside Facebook.com. Or tools like Picnik photo editor connect with your Facebook photos and allow you to edit them right there. There have been some really cool apps too, like the Coke Zero Facial Profiler that finds your twin on Facebook…kinda scary 🙂

You can go to Account Settings and select Apps from the left menu to get to your App Settings and see all the apps that you’ve allowed to access your Facebook profile.

More info from Facebook on apps: Apps on Facebook for developers; Games & Apps in Facebook Help Center

      Thanks for the question!
